PE & Sport Curriculum

At Baines, we aim to develop pupils’ ability to acquire new knowledge and skills exceptionally well. We encourage the willingness to practise skills in a wide range of different activities and situations; alone, in small groups and in teams and to apply these skills in chosen activities to achieve high levels of performance. We encourage high levels of fitness and a healthy lifestyle, achieved by eating sensibly and exercising regularly. We aim for our pupils to remain physically active for sustained periods of time and to understand the importance of this in promoting long-term health and well-being. We encourage our children to take the initiative and become excellent young leaders, organising and officiating and evaluating what needs to be done to improve, as well as motivating and instilling excellent sporting attitudes in others. We teach children how to improve their own and others’ performance and to work independently for extended periods of time, using imagination and creativity in their techniques, tactics and choreography. We strive to foster a keen interest in P.E., a willingness to participate eagerly in every lesson, positive attitudes and the ability to make informed choices about engaging fully in extra-curricular sport.

All pupils, in each year group, experience an outdoor adventure day which enables them to take their love of PE into a different environment.

Swimming

Through swimming lessons at our local swimming pool, we develop the ability of our pupils to swim at least 25 metres before the end of Year 6 and the knowledge of how to remain safe in and around water.
