MFL (French)

At Baines’ we teach French, as an additional language, in discreet lessons of 30 minutes per week. These lessons begin once the children are part of KS2 although class teachers will often use some basic vocabulary such as ‘Hello’ in different languages during daily school routines. Our aim is to make learning a new language interesting and fun and provide the children with opportunities to develop the ability to hold a conversation in French about a variety of subjects.

Repetition and practice are essential in learning a new language and as such we dedicate the first third of each lesson to basic conversation. We then learn some new vocabulary from the current topic and then complete an activity to help reinforce the new vocabulary and give children the opportunity to read and write using it. We use the Language Angels scheme as a base for our language curriculum.
