History

At Baines’, Children gain knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past, which then extends to the wider world. Teaching focusses on changes within living memory, events beyond living memory and the lives of specific individuals. Links between specific individuals will be made by comparing and contrasting their lives, and looking at the impact on the period of time would have had one them. Emphasis is placed on the local area of Marton, which is focused on in Year One for their seaside unit, and Year Five learning about how Marton has changed since the Victorian era. Links to the local area in History are also be made with Geography across the Key stages during fieldwork studies, and the use of maps/ Digimaps to see how change has occurred.

Key stage 2 will learn about many periods of time in History and the effects the period of time had on Britain and changes on society today. Such periods include; The Roman Empire, Changes to Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, Beyond 1066 and non-European units. The children progressively develop their enquiry skills by being given a range of sources, hands on experiences and chances to research areas of the unit they are interested in. Every year group gives children the opportunity to place periods on a timeline and to also make links to other periods of time they have studied in previous year groups.

Writing in History will be promoted through cross-curricular writing experiences which will be rich in factual Historical vocabulary. Children will be able to use new vocabulary through oral, written and presented work.
