Geography

At Baines’ we offer a high-quality Geography education which inspires children to become curious about the world and people around them. Our Geography is relevant, purposeful and linked to current events and topical issued present in our modern world. The Geography curriculum is also linked to the rest of the curriculum where possible. As children develop their understanding of the surrounding location, facts, names and vocabulary, a sense of place will emerge which will allow our children to show empathy and understanding towards other cultures, change and opinions. Children are given opportunities to learn about topical issues such as climate change, world and fair trade.

Each year group is given opportunities for on-site and off-site field work opportunities, whether it be the local area or discovering rivers and hilly terrains. Through geographical enquiry and fieldwork, children will develop an awareness of change occurring in the world around them. The relationship between human and physical processes will be questioned throughout the programs of study.

Geography skills are developed by conducting fieldwork, communicating data and interpreting maps, globes and diagrams. Children at Baines’ learn how to use essential map reading skills, which progressively become more difficult as they move through school. Throughout their learning journey, Baines’ children learn about the world around them, climate zones and the relation between the tropics and equator. They will learn about the local area and will have opportunities to see how Marton and Blackpool have changed over time using modern technologies such as Digi-maps.

Writing in Geography is promoted through cross-curricular writing experiences which are rich in factual Geographical vocabulary. Children are given opportunities able to use new vocabulary through oral, written and presented work.
